Through an in-depth analysis of Shakespeare's works, students can develop critical thinking and language skills, as well as a deeper understanding of the human condition. Moreover, understanding Shakespeare's plays can also improve students' cultural literacy and appreciation for classic literature, which is crucial in today's fast-paced world. By exploring the significance of Shakespeare's work, this paper aims to highlight the importance of including Shakespearean studies in modern curricula.
Analysis
To illustrate the enduring relevance of Shakespeare's characters, one can look to his play "Hamlet." The character of Hamlet is a young man struggling to come to terms with the death of his father and the betrayal of his mother. He grapples with questions of morality and the meaning of life, as well as the conflicting demands of duty and personal desire. It’s over 400 years old, and yet it offers us a vocabulary for the things that haven’t changed (Zhang, 2022). Shakespeare remains popular in the 21st century because of his influence on the English language, his universal and enduring characters, his controversy around authorship, his profitable brand, his mysterious likeness, and the fact that his work resonates with people from different cultures and times. He continues to be relevant as he understands human emotions and portrays complex themes with ease and prowess.
